We all have been through these questions (and much more) and wasted a lot of time trying to find the best answers on the internet.
Wouldn’t it be great to learn everything you need in one place, get your questions answered by experienced travellers and already join the bike touring community even before starting up your trip?

That’s what we did for you!

We developed this crash course for beginners in which you will get all the knowledge and skills you need to plan relaxed your bicycle trip and get your questions answered by experts.

Key content of the basic workshop:

  • Planning your bike trip: Learn to plan an enjoyable bicycle tour matching your level
  • Cycling basics: Learn simple rules to fully enjoy your trip
  • Mechanics: Learn how to fix the most common problems on your bicycle
  • On the road: Discover the daily life on the road and learn how to react to unexpected situations
  • Anatomy: Discover the sensitive areas for cyclists and how to prevent injuries
  • Immediate first aid: Content of your first aid kit and how to use it
  • Camping basics: Set a camp site and hygiene in the heart of the nature
  • Full access to the Root-B community exchange group

Who is this workshop designed for?

  • Experience: This workshop is accessible to everyone! No previous experience in bike touring is required.
  • Age limits: Bike touring has no upper limits! For responsability reasons, we unfortunately cannot accept children.
  • Technical knowledges: We will teach you everything you need. You don’t need any previous technical knowledge.
  • Physical condition: We will not ride the bike during this workshop so you don’t need any special physical preparation prior to the workshop.
  • Equipment: We will provide you all the necessary equipment in order to make you train the mechanical and the first aid clusters in real conditions. If you prefer to practice on your own bike and/or with your own tools, feel free to bring them!
  • Clothes: Depending on the session you booked, the workshop takes place indoor or outdoor (See next available workshops for more information). Please note that the outdoor workshops will take place in real conditions, regardless of the weather (as during your bike tour). Depending on the weather forecast, you may want to bring waterproof/warm clothes.
  • Last but not least: Good mood and fun are higly recommended

The basic bike tour preparation workshop (20 hours in total) is organised in 7 clusters:

#1: Planning your bike tour

  • How far can I ride in a day?
  • How much time will I spend on my bike per day?
  • What kind of bike should I use? What are the main differences between them?
  • Which material and gears should I take with me?
  • Where will I sleep during my trip?
  • How much space for food and water should I plan on my bike?
  • Which apps or websites can I use to plan my trip?
  • Key points to consider for the planning (Transport, vaccines, visas…)
  • How to pack your panniers
  • Miscellaneous bike travelers tips: Warmshowers, bike touring network, ideal food to carry on a bike tour, how to transport your bike in public transports…

#2: On the road

  • How to orientate yourself?
  • Where to refill water along the road?
  • How to properly use the gears to avoid premature fatigue (of your bike and yourself)?
  • How to react in case of severe weather?
  • How to handle other road users

#3: Cycling basics

  • Key features of a touring bicycle
  • What is the pedalling frequency? Why is it so important?
  • How to properly use the gears to avoid premature fatigue (of your bike and yourself)?
  • How to use your brakes properly?
  • How to safely ride downhill with a loaded bike?

#4: Mechanics

  • Which repairing tools and spare parts should I carry with me?
  • How to repair a flat tire?*
  • What is the spoke tension? How to quick check it?*
  • How to repair a broken spoke?*
  • How to repair a broken chain?*
  • How to adjust the settings of your derailleur?*
  • How to wash your hands after repairing your bike in the wildness?*

#5: Anatomy

  • Anatomy of the sensitive areas for the cyclist (Hand, knees, buttock)
  • Identify risky situations for injuries
  • Origin of the wrist and hand pains. How to prevent them?
  • Origin of the knee pain. How to prevent it?
  • Reduce the risk of buttock pain

#6: Immediate first aid

  • Minimum content of a first aid kit
  • How to react in case of an accident?
  • Stop strong bleeding*
  • Manage unconsciousness*
